Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about how SameBoat works, how your privacy is protected, and what to expect.

1. How much does SameBoat cost?

SameBoat is completely free. There are no subscriptions, trial periods, or paid add-ons.

2. Is SameBoat therapy or mental health treatment?

No. SameBoat is peer support: people talking with other people in the same spot. It is not therapy, counseling, medical care, or a crisis service. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or see our Safety & Crisis Resources page.

3. Who sees my profile and the story I write?

Your profile details (role, industry, where you are in your search) are used only to match you and are not shown on a public profile. If you choose to share a story, it is checked for safety first and then published on the members-only Stories page, under your name or a generated anonymous handle, your choice. Stories are never public on the open web.

4. How many people are in a group?

Groups have 4 to 6 people. That’s large enough to keep conversation moving and small enough that everyone knows who’s talking.

5. What name does my group see?

Your boat sees the name and photo from your sign-in, or a display name you set in your Profile. Your email address is never shown to other members.

6. Which sign-in options exist, and why are there no passwords?

You can sign in with Google, GitHub, LinkedIn, or a one-time 6-digit code sent to your email (valid for 10 minutes and single-use). There are no passwords, so there is no password for you to remember or for anyone to leak.

7. What if my group goes quiet or doesn’t click?

Email hello@sameboat.app and we’ll help. In a Voyage, every member chooses at week six to renew with the same crew, switch to a new boat, or disembark, with no penalty for any choice.

8. How does moderation work?

Every post is checked by an automated AI safety check. Anything it flags is held for human review by Varry LLC before anyone else sees it, and the author is told the post is pending. You can report a shared story from the Stories page, and you can email hello@sameboat.app about anything that happens in your boat.

9. What emails will SameBoat send me, and how do I stop them?

SameBoat sends three kinds of email from hello@sameboat.app: (1) Account and security (sign-in codes and security notices, always on because your account needs them), (2) Group notifications (like when you’re matched or a Voyage check-in is due, on by default, with a one-click unsubscribe link in every email), and (3) Product updates (off unless you opt in, and clearly labeled as an advertisement). Manage all of this at app.sameboat.app/email/preferences from the signed link in any email footer (no login needed), or in your Profile.

10. Do you track when I open or click emails?

No. Open and click tracking is turned off on all SameBoat emails. If an address hard-bounces or reports spam, sending to it is paused automatically.

11. Are recruiters, career coaches, or employers allowed in groups?

No. Selling, recruiting, MLM pitches, lead generation, and business deals are banned under our Community Guidelines, including inside Voyages.

12. How do I delete my account and data?

Open your Profile in the app and choose Delete account. Your account, profile, story, and goal data are deleted. If you can’t sign in, email hello@sameboat.app from the address on your account.

13. Who is eligible to use SameBoat?

SameBoat is open to adults aged 18 and older.

14. How do I contact SameBoat support?

Write to us any time at hello@sameboat.app.

15. What is a Voyage, and how is it different from a regular boat?

A regular boat (a Harbor) is a private support chat. A Voyage is the same small group plus a shared goal: “Land your next role.” It runs six weeks with a weekly check-in, a goal board, “Ask the boat” help requests, and an opt-in wins wall. Voyages are open now; choose one when you opt in to matching.

16. Do I have to set goals or post check-ins?

No. Support comes first. Goals and check-ins are optional for every member, even inside a Voyage. If you go quiet for a couple of weeks, you may get one private, friendly nudge by email, never a public callout.

17. Is a Voyage a job board or a recruiting service?

No. There are no job listings, recruiters, or paid services. Members help each other directly, with things like a resume read, a mock interview, or an introduction. Selling, recruiting, and business deals, including equity or partnership offers, are not allowed in any boat.

18. What happens when a Voyage ends?

At week six, each member chooses to renew with the same crew for another six weeks, switch to a different boat, or disembark. There is no penalty for any choice. Check-in reminders are group notifications, so you can turn them off in your email preferences at any time.
